Club runs are a big part of being a member, and you’ll find something to suit all abilities. Weekly Club road rides take place on Saturday and Sunday as well as Wednesday evenings during summer. There are also Wednesday evening, weekend and some weekday off road rides organised. The club rides feature various destinations, distances and terrain and usually include a social call at a cyclist friendly café.
All road rides start and finish at Java Café on the High Street in Uppermill unless stated otherwise. Regular Wednesday evening MTB rides depart from opposite the bus turning circle in Uppermill at 7.10pm.
The routes and destinations for each ride will vary from week to week but can be quite challenging due to the hilly nature of the beautiful Pennine countryside around Saddleworth. We try to tailor the range of rides we offer to suit all abilities.
Non- members are most welcome to join us for a few rides. Riders that join us regularly are encouraged to sign up for membership of Saddleworth Clarion.
The Saturday C Ride is the easiest of the club rides and is ideal for those wanting to try out the club and experience the fun and social element of riding with a group of fellow cyclists. No one is ever left behind. The ride incorporates a welcome social stop at a local cyclist friendly café.
The C Ride usually covers 30-40 miles but can be more or less depending on the ability of the riders in the group and the terrain & weather conditions.
The Saturday C Ride is at a steadier gentle pace, and no rider is left behind.
All routes use quiet roads and lanes around the Saddleworth & local area where possible, however there may be occasions when the routes take the group onto busier roads.
Suitable for riders of all abilities, although we recommend those that are perhaps new to cycling or nervous about riding with a group try the Monthly Social Ride first.
8.45am for 9.00am start.
The Sunday A Ride is the longest weekend ride the Club undertake and usually involves a ride out to a café.
The A Ride typically covers around 50 -70 miles, but it can be more or less depending on the riders in the group, the terrain, time of year and weather conditions.
The A Ride pace is moderate, suitable for anyone experienced in riding longer distances and spending several hours in the saddle.
All routes try and follow quieter more friendly cycling roads where possible, however there will be occasions when the routes take the group onto busier roads.
Experience of longer rides over varied hilly & rolling terrain.
8.45am for 9.00am start.
The Sunday B Ride is a faster, shorter ride than the A ride and doesn’t usually include a café stop.
Our Sunday B Ride typically covers around 35-45 miles but it can be more or less depending on the ability of the riders in the group, the terrain, and weather conditions. Rides generally arrive back about mid-day.
The B Ride is a fast, but not excessive pace that means that 30-45 miles in the hilly terrain of the Pennines are usually covered in about 2.5 – 3.5 hours.
All routes use quiet roads where possible, however there may be occasions when the routes take the group onto busier roads.
Experience of riding in a group, over hilly & rolling terrain.
8.45am for 9.00am start.
The Monthly Saturday Social Ride is ideal for beginners and those new to cycling who wish to join a group for a leisurely cycle ride around Saddleworth. It is led by experienced club members and usually ends at a local cafe. This popular ride attracts both members and non-members alike and is also promoted as part of the British Cycling HSBC UK Ride Social group rides.
This usually averages between 15 and 20 miles but may be more or less depending on the ability of the riders in the group.
The Social Ride runs at a very easy pace, that of the slowest rider. No one is left behind.
All routes use quiet roads in and around Saddleworth, however there may be occasions when the routes take the group onto busier roads.
Leisure cyclists and beginners.
9.00am for 9.30am start on the last Saturday of every month
The club runs regular off road MTB rides on Wednesday evenings, plus weekend off road rides organised for riders of all abilities and experience. There is a growing group within the club enjoying ad-hoc mid-week mountain bike rides along the local canals, always involving a cafe stop.
Regular Wednesday evening MTB rides depart from opposite the bus turning circle in Uppermill at 7.10pm. (NOT from Java). These Wednesday MTB rides take place throughout the year, whatever the weather. A good set of working lights is essential kit. The rides usually last about 2 hours and end with a sociable drink in a local hostelry.
The Wednesday Evening Ride takes place during the Summer months from May to September. Lights are recommended.
Our Wednesday Ride usually averages between 50-70km but can be more or less depending on the ability of the riders, the weather and daylight hours.
The Wednesday Ride averages between 24-28km/h.
All routes use quiet roads where possible, however there may be occasions where we ride on busier roads.
Experience of riding in a group for 2-3 hours.
